Shikisakura Arushiroi Junmai Ginjo 720ml
When Tomoko Nishioka had to uproot her family from Shizuoka, and return to Tochigi to take over her father's rice farm, it was no smooth sailing. She had little hands-on experience growing rice. Yet, the neighbouring farmers offered to teach her, and people from the village offered to help the new kid on the block; establishing momofarm.
She soon fell in love with the rice fields, the open spaces and the connection with the land and the people. That led to her fateful meeting with Utsunomiya Brewery, makers of Shikisakura sake. A collaboration was soon birthed, between Tomoko-san of momofarm, Rari Yoshio of Nasu (a creative curator) and Aki Imai of Utsunomiya Brewery.
The trio of strong modern ladies created this sake, Arushiroi; inspired by beauty of Tochigi, and dedicated to the women that embody it.
Lest you think this is a sweet & flowery exercise, think again! While the nose is floral, the palate begins with notes of vanilla, but quickly turns to a bold celebration of cooked rice. The finish is quick and clean. Unapologetically bottled at 17%abv, it packs a quiet punch and is extremely enjoyable with savoury offerings. Extremely versatile, Arushiroi is recommended to be enjoyed throughout a range of temperatures.
